Surry units cleared for 80-year operation
The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved an application by Dominion 抖阴传媒在线's Virginia subsidiary for a 20-year extension to the operating licences of the twin-unit Surry nuclear power plant. This will enable the two pressurised water reactors to operate until 2052 and 2053, respectively.

Economic viability study a 'wakeup call' for US plants: NEI
Most of the nuclear plants in the PJM Interconnection wholesale electricity market - covering 13 US states and the District of Columbia - will not produce enough revenue to remain economically viable in the coming years, an independent economic evaluation has concluded.

Indian Point celebrates record run as closure approaches
Entergy Corporation's Indian Point unit 3 will be shut down tomorrow after nearly 60 years of nuclear power generation at the site in New York state. The closure will bring to an end a world record-breaking run for the pressurised water reactor.

Fukui governor approves restart of three reactors
The governor of Japan's Fukui Prefecture today approved the restart of three reactors owned by Kansai Electric Power Company - Takahama units 1 and 2, and Mihama unit 3. His consent was the final approval needed for the reactors - all aged over 40 years old - to resume operation.

Fuel loading under way at Tianwan 6
The loading of fuel assemblies into the core of the reactor of unit 6 at the Tianwan nuclear power plant in China's Jiangsu province began on 14 April, China National Nuclear Corporation has announced. The domestically-designed ACPR1000 reactor is scheduled to enter commercial operation by the end of this year.

Regulator bans fuel loading at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa
Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority has today issued an administrative order to Tokyo Electric Power Company preventing it from transporting nuclear fuel stored at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant or loading it into reactors. The order - issued in response to a series of security breaches at the site - will delay Tepco's planned restart of unit 7 at the plant in Niigata Prefecture.

Hunterston B cleared for six months of operation
The UK's Office for Nuclear Regulation has today provided EDF with permission for Reactors 3 and 4 at the Hunterston nuclear power plant in North Ayrshire, Scotland to return to service for a limited period of operation. This will be the power station’s final period of operation before moving into the defueling phase.

Framatome to provide outage services to Dominion fleet
Framatome recently signed a "multi-million dollar" contract with US utility Dominion 抖阴传媒在线 to support the long-term operation of its nuclear power plant fleet. The five-year contract covers nuclear power plant outage and maintenance work, including steam generator services, refuelling services and inspections.

UAE's first nuclear unit starts commercial operation
Barakah unit 1 entered commercial operation today, the Emirates Nuclear 抖阴传媒在线 Corporation has announced. The unit, which is operated by Nawah 抖阴传媒在线 Company, has been the single largest electricity generator in the UAE since reaching 100% power in early December. ENEC said the 1400-megawatt unit, which is in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi, is now providing "constant, reliable and sustainable electricity around the clock". As a result, ENEC says it is "now leading the largest decarbonisation effort of any industry in the UAE to date".

Bruce commits to net-zero operations by 2027
Bruce Power has committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from its site operations by 2027, building on its previously announced
NZ-2050
plan. The company says it is the first nuclear operator in North America to announce such an ambitious commitment.

KHNP and ENEC expand APR1400 cooperation
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and the Emirates Nuclear 抖阴传媒在线 Corporation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate on research & development and technology exchange related to the operation of Korean-designed APR1400 reactors. South Korea's first APR1400 unit entered commercial operation in December 2015, while four such reactors are due to start up in the UAE by 2023.

Russia makes progress with fast reactor upgrade
Zio-Podolsk has started manufacturing modules for PGN-200M steam generators as part of work to upgrade unit 3 of the Beloyarsk nuclear power plant in the Sverdlovsk district of Russia. Zio-Podolsk is a subsidiary of Rosatom, which said the modernisation work was aimed at extending the operating life of the unit to 60 years.
