The revamped project plan for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor aims for "a scientifically and technically robust initial phase of operations, including deuterium-deuterium fusion operation in 2035 followed by full magnetic energy and plasma current operation".

Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority has approved the operation of units 3 and 4 at Kansai Electric Power Company's Takahama nuclear power plant in Fukui prefecture for a further 20 years. Both reactors are currently in operation and will reach their 40th anniversaries in January and June of 2025, respectively.

The UK's National Nuclear Laboratory and the Japan Atomic ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Agency have signed a collaboration agreement on coated particle fuel, for use in high temperature gas-cooled reactors.

Tokyo Electric Power Company plans to begin loading fuel into unit 7 of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant in Niigata Prefecture following approval by Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority. It is not yet known when the reactor will be restarted.

All remaining highly enriched uranium from the Japan Atomic ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Agency's Japan Materials Testing Reactor Critical Assembly has now been returned to the USA. Japan and the USA have been cooperating for many years to repatriate HEU from Japanese research reactors to the USA.

The new partnership brings together the US Department of ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß and Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to work to accelerate the demonstration and commercialisation of fusion energy. The announcement was made during a visit by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to the USA.

Physical protection measures at Japan's seven-unit Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant have been significantly strengthened over recent years, according to the International Atomic ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Agency. The finding came as Tokyo Electric Power Company submitted a plan to the nuclear regulator to begin loading fuel into unit 7 of the plant later this month.
