Canada's largest oil sands producers have formed an alliance that aims to work with federal and provincial government to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from their operations by 2050. The Oil Sands Pathways to Net Zero initiative will, amongst other things, evaluate and accelerate the application of emerging emissions-reducing technologies including small modular nuclear reactors.

A Canadian innovation organisation has launched a new study into the role of nuclear power in supporting a growing hydrogen economy. The Nuclear Innovation Institute study will be the first of its kind in Canada to evaluate the technical viability and business case for hydrogen production from emissions-free nuclear power.

Solar and wind power have the same share of low-carbon electricity globally that they did 20 years ago, proving that they need to work together with nuclear energy for net zero to be achievable, John Gorman, president & CEO of the Canadian Nuclear Association, told delegates at the Nuclear ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Assembly yesterday. Gorman was speaking in the panel discussion Nuclear ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß: A Tool for Meeting Global Goals at the US Nuclear ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Institute event. The panel was moderated by Carol Berrigan, NEI's executive director for Federal Programs and Supplier Relationships.

Canadian company Kinectrics has announced plans to design, build and operate a collaborative clean energy innovation campus, Helius, which will amongst other things provide infrastructure needed to support the development, testing and commercialisation of small modular reactors. The new campus is to be sited alongside Kinectrics’ existing laboratories in Toronto, Ontario.

The construction of the first BWRX-300 small modular reactor in Ontario will generate about CAD2.3 billion (USD1.9 billion) in GDP, CAD1.9 billion in labour income and more than CAD750 million in federal, provincial and municipal tax revenue, PwC Canada has estimated in an independent report commissioned by GE Hitachi Nuclear ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has completed the first phase of the pre-licensing vendor design review for Moltex ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß’s 300 MWe Stable Salt Reactor - Wasteburner small modular reactor.

Global First Power Ltd's application for a licence to prepare a site for a small modular reactor at Chalk River in Ontario has moved to the technical review phase of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission's licensing process. GFP plans to build and operate a Micro Modular Reactor unit by 2026.

NuScale Power has signed a second Memorandum of Understanding with Canadian commercial marine nuclear power developer Prodigy Clean ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß to support business opportunities for a marine-deployed nuclear power plant using the NuScale small modular reactor.

Production at the Cigar Lake uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan, Canada, resumed near the end of April following the second COVID-19 related shutdown, Cameco said on 7 May whilst announcing its results for the first quarter of 2021. The company said its deliveries to customers in 2020 were not impacted by the pandemic and it does not expect there to be a material impact on its 2021 deliveries. However, it now expects to purchase more uranium in order to meet its supply contracts.

The International Atomic ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Agency has designated Ontario Tech University as a Collaborating Centre to support IAEA activities on advanced nuclear power technology, including small modular reactors, as well as the non‑electric applications of nuclear energy. The institution is the first in Canada to receive such a designation.

Uranium investment company Uranium Participation Corporation has entered into a definitive agreement with Sprott Asset Management LP to convert UPC into the Sprott Physical Uranium Trust and pursue listing on US stock exchanges. Denison Mines Inc's Management Services Agreement with UPC will be terminated, with Denison set to receive a termination payment estimated at CAD5.3 million (USD4.3 million).
