Canada's Nuclear Waste Management Organization has completed borehole drilling work at Ignace, which is being studied as a possible host area for a deep geological repository for Canada's used nuclear fuel. Some 6 km of rock has been retrieved during the four-year drilling programme.

A year-long, CAD8.4 million (USD6.6 million) contract will see Canada's Candu ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß prepare the licensing basis for two new Candu pressurised heavy water reactors at Romania's Cernavoda nuclear power plant. A project to relocate low-level radioactive waste from historic Canadian radium and uranium refining operations to a new, above-ground long-term storage facility has been completed, with the final layers of topsoil and grass placed on the engineered mound, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories has announced. The capping and closure of the mound at the Port Granby Project Long-Term Waste Management Facility completes a project begun in 2016.

A five-year test programme on an innovative mining method that could potentially be used to access high-grade orebodies that are either too small or too deep to be mined economically using conventional methods has been completed by Denison Mines Corp and Orano Canada Inc. The patented Surface Access Borehole Resource Extraction - SABRE - mining method has been tested on the McClean Lake property in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Kazatomprom has reduced its expected production figures for 2021 due to delays in exploration and wellfield development activity, citing pandemic-related supply chain issues which have had a material impact on production schedules. The Kazakh uranium producer's announcement comes days after Canadian company Cameco reduced its forecast for fuel services production for the year citing supply chain issues.

Bruce Power has today launched Bruce Power Net Zero Inc to leverage the net-zero generation provided by Bruce's nuclear power plants to enable the company to achieve its own ambition to be net-zero by 2027 and support Ontario and Canada in reaching net-zero by 2050. The new entity is led by Bruce Power Chief Development Officer and EVP Operational Services James Scongack.

GE Hitachi Nuclear ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß and BWXT Canada have entered into a teaming agreement to cooperate on engineering and procurement to support the design, manufacturing and commercialisation of the BWRX-300 small modular reactor. The BWRX-300 is one of three SMR designs under consideration for deployment at Ontario Power Generation's Darlington site.

Separate domestic and international initiatives to support the development and production of medical radioisotopes have been announced in Canada, Germany, Japan and the USA. These include a federal award of USD35 million to support the commercial production of molybdenum-99 in the USA; a new linear accelerator-based technique for production of actinium-225 in Japan; and a Canadian-German collaboration to explore the production of Ac-225.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power plan to leverage data gathered through decades of experience of the storage of used Candu fuel to underpin cooperative research activities under a new Memorandum of Understanding between the two organisations. They will engage in knowledge-sharing and other joint activities to advance storage, transportation and disposal practices for used fuel, and to explore opportunities to collaborate on nuclear decommissioning and waste management initiatives.
