What are the main priorities, the key events and the likely big developments in new nuclear capacity in 2026? Here’s an edited transcript of ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Nuclear Association Director General Sama Bilbao y León's ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Nuclear News podcast interview.

What were the most-read ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Nuclear News stories, and what has ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Nuclear Association Director General Sama Bilbao y León picked out as her key moments of 2025? Read a month-by-month summary, and listen to the full podcast episode.

Johan Svenningsson is Country Chairman and CEO of Uniper Sweden, as well as being vice chairman and chairman-elect of ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Nuclear Association.

The total number of countries endorsing the declaration to at least triple global nuclear generating capacity by 2050 has increased to 33 with Rwanda and Senegal both joining the initiative on the sidelines of the COP30 climate conference in Belém, Brazil. Support from nuclear industry companies and financial institutions has also increased.

The tripling of global nuclear capacity by 2050 can be achieved, provided governments take immediate and sustained action to deliver on their own national targets for nuclear capacity, a report from ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Nuclear Association concludes.

If global nuclear energy capacity is to at least triple by 2050 there needs to be huge investment - potentially USD250 billion a year for 25 years. So how will it be financed, and what are the opportunities and challenges for financiers wanting to get involved?

The figures show that global nuclear electricity generation is set to achieve a record high in 2025, and with more countries turning to nuclear to meet their energy needs, the industry's future looks promising, the ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Nuclear Exhibition in Paris has heard.

The 2025 ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Nuclear Symposium marked a historic milestone: the 50th edition of the flagship gathering of the global nuclear industry. Held in London, the event brought together leaders from government, industry, finance, and technology under the theme Energizing the Future Now. ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Nuclear Association Director General Sama Bilbao y León reflects on the main messages from the discussions.

More than 1,100 people gathered in London for the 50th ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Nuclear Symposium, taking part in a packed programme of discussions, panels and networking. In addition to the usual broad range of topics there were also two special full day programmes - one focused on end energy users and one on finance.

Making the most of existing nuclear plants will be vital if the challenge of tripling nuclear capacity by 2050 is to be met - and innovative approaches, including artificial intelligence tools, can help, according to panelists at ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Nuclear Symposium.

The 2025 ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Nuclear Symposium marked the 50th incarnation of an event which began in the earliest days of ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Nuclear Association’s forerunner organisation the Uranium Institute, growing from a modest (in size, although not in ambition) 1976 gathering at the Institute of Electrical Engineers to this year’s event taking place over three days at the Royal Lancaster Hotel.

The growing interest from institutional investors in the nuclear sector, and the issues surrounding developing suitable private financing options for new nuclear projects were in focus at ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Nuclear Association's Finance Summit.
