A Washington, DC-based organisation led by former US ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Secretary Ernest Moniz has called for greater federal-level recognition of the importance of the USA's nuclear energy supply chain to national security. In its first major report, ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Future Initiatives recommends immediate government action to support and encourage existing and future new-build projects and strengthen the supply chain.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued a confirmatory order to Westinghouse following the May 2016 discovery of an accumulation of uranium-bearing material at a fuel fabrication facility. A unique piece of equipment that can compress a 55-gallon (200-litre) waste drum to a fifth of its original size has achieved 100,000 hours of operation at the US Department of ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß's Idaho site. Compacting has reduced the number of shipments of transuranic waste from the Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project for disposal in New Mexico.
