The diplomatic notes Poland and the USA exchanged last year on cooperation in the development of Poland's civil nuclear power programme have officially entered into force, Poland's Secretary of State for Strategic ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Infrastructure Piotr Naimski told the TOK FM radio station yesterday. This means the USA now has 18 months to prepare both a technology and a financing offer to build nuclear power plants in Poland, he said.

Poland's Council of Ministers yesterday approved an energy policy to 2040 (PEP2040) that aims to reduce the share of coal in the country's electricity generation mix from 72% in 2020 to 56% in 2030. The policy includes construction of six nuclear power units.

The OECD Nuclear ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Agency has launched an initiative together with Poland's Ministry of Climate and Environment and the International Framework for Nuclear ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Cooperation to collaborate on issues of common interest related to innovative nuclear financing. The initiative began with a technical workshop on 14-15 January, which brought together experts from the public, private and academic sectors to discuss a number of fundamental issues pertaining to the financing of nuclear new build.

Polish climate and environmental activists are asking Germany to reconsider its 2011 decision to phase out nuclear power. On 18 December, activists from the FOTA4Climate initiative submitted to the German embassy in Warsaw an open letter signed by Polish scientists, intellectuals, activists and citizens.

Synthos Green ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß has announced the completion of a deployment feasibility study for the implementation of a fleet of GE Hitachi Nuclear ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß BWRX-300 small modular reactors in Poland. The study, which was prepared by Exelon Generation, will help the Synthos Group estimate how many reactors would need to be built to make the most of the cost effect of serial SMR production.

Grzegorz Stanislavsky, a member of the supervisory board of the Polish company Polenergia, as well as of the management board of the Ukraine Power Bridge Company, has insisted that the Ukraine-European Union ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Bridge project should go ahead. The project has geopolitical significance, not only for Energoatom and the Ukrainian state, he said, but above all for the countries of Europe, "which are forced to fight for their energy independence".

Synthos Green ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß has signed a cooperation agreement with Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC) to assess the feasibility of the micro modular reactor (MMR) plant design to generate carbon-free hydrogen, heat, and power for use in SGE’s chemical plants. SGE is part of Synthos SA Capital Group, which includes Synthos SA, a chemical manufacturer based in Poland, with operations in the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and France. The aim is for the MMR ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß System to replace existing plants that use coal or natural gas.

Synthos Green ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß has entered discussions with the Polish nuclear regulator about a potential GE Hitachi Nuclear ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß BWRX-300 small modular reactor project. SGE is seeking a general opinion from the regulator, PaÅ„stwowa Agencja Atomistyki, which it described as the first step of the procedure before the regulatory process for the planned construction of a nuclear power plant in Poland.

Poland will ask the European Commission to approve state aid for the construction of what will be the country's first nuclear power plants, Secretary of State for Strategic ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Infrastructure Piotr Naimski told reporters in Warsaw yesterday, according to Reuters. "It is impossible these days to build a nuclear power plant without state support," Naimski said.

US Secretary of ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Dan Brouillette and Poland's Secretary of State for Strategic ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Infrastructure Piotr Naimski yesterday discussed the signing of the first intergovernmental agreement to cooperate on the development of Poland's civil nuclear power programme. Brouillette signed the agreement yesterday and it will be signed by Naimski once it is received in Warsaw.

The shareholders of PGE EJ1, the company set up to build and operate Poland's first nuclear power plant, have signed a letter of intent with the State Treasury regarding the acquisition of 100% of its shares. The transaction, if completed, will see the government take full control of PGE EJ1 at the end of the year.

A high-level panel of senior political figures and experts from leading international energy organisations yesterday discussed how nuclear energy can address some of the most pressing issues the world is facing. The discussion took place during the first session of ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß Nuclear Association's Strategic eForum 2020.
