Core components of Sweden's Ringhals units 1 and 2 will be cut up and disposed of by Westinghouse, starting as early as April 2023, plant owner Vattenfall has announced. The fuel is currently held in an ageing storage facility at the site which does not meet current requirements.

Ringhals 1 today became the fourth reactor to close in Sweden in the last seven years. The unit, on the west coast of the country, was permanently disconnected from the national grid after 44 years of operation, according to data from its operator, Ringhals AB, which is owned by Vattenfall (70.4%) and Sydkraft Nuclear Power (29.6%).

Westinghouse will segment the reactor at the Ã…gesta nuclear power plant near Stockholm, Sweden, under a contract signed with Vattenfall. The country's first commercial power reactor - it operated between 1964 and 1974 - the R3 heavy water reactor supplied electricity and district heating to the Stockholm suburb of Farsta.

The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority has today approved the independent core cooling systems implemented by the operators of the country's nuclear power plants. The operators were required to introduce such systems following the accident at Fukushima Daiichi. The systems were to be in place by the end of this year in order for the reactors to continue operating.

Vattenfall yesterday celebrated the 40th anniversary of the start of commercial operation of unit 1 at the Forsmark nuclear power plant. The Swedish utility is marking the occasion with an exhibition of photographs from the unit's construction period and its first year of operation.
